The Position
Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts is seeking a Director of Development who will partner with the Chief Development Officer and Chief Executive Officer and serve as the primary leader in the strategic execution of PPLM’s five-year, $50 million campaign for health equity in sexual and reproductive health. This is a unique opportunity to advance health equity across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and to join an organization deeply committed to racial justice and equity.
The incumbent will be a passionate fundraiser, adept at inspiring donors as well as motivating and mentoring staff. The Director of Development will also provide day-to-day oversight for several development functions, including development communications, stewardship, events, and mid-level annual giving.
Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Development will be a strategic thinker and have exceptionally strong communication skills, be well-organized and driven, with related hands-on experience, and demonstrated success in non-profit fundraising. The Director of Development will serve as the number two to the Chief Development Officer in managing the department.
Related experience should include capital campaign, individual giving and major gifts programs, events, communications, and staff management. The ideal candidate is energetic, strategic, and a team player who is passionate about the mission of PPLM and devoted to advancing a race+ equity approach to every aspect of their work.
Responsibilities
- Supervise staff ensuring they meet their goals, stay on budget, and advance in their professional development, ensuring retention. This position currently supervises two development officers, with an additional campaign position to be added in late FY22.
- Demonstrate a clear commitment (to colleagues and supporters) to PPLM’s work toward becoming an anti-racist organization.
- Partner with the Chief Development Officer (CDO) to set and implement department culture and strategy and provide leadership and mentoring for staff.
- Partner with CDO on development and execution of campaign strategy, including but not limited to: The development and revision of campaign policies; campaign communications; engaging departments across PPLM in campaign work; management of campaign-related committees (internal and external); ensuring adherence to campaign timeline.
- Work with the Senior Major Gifts Officer to ensure that gift officers have the necessary campaign materials for successful cultivation, stewardship and solicitation.
- Oversee community-and event-based fundraising initiatives (i.e., house parties, stewardship events, and annual Celebration of Choices gala) developing strategy to broaden PPLM's base of support from individuals who can contribute $1,000-$10,000 (mid-level).
- Oversee development communications including donor email updates, PPLM Council Communications, The Advocate (newsletter), the PPLM Annual Report, campaign-specific communications, and fundraising appeals. Partner with the communications team, and others as necessary, in the creation of development materials.
- In collaboration with the Director of Development Operations, provide thought partnership and guidance to staff regarding strategy for President’s Society (mid-level annual giving) solicitation and stewardship.
- Carry a small major gifts portfolio of donors and prospects who have the capacity to make gifts of $25,000 or more for the Annual Fund and campaign.
- Work with the CDO to staff the Development Committee and campaign-related committees.
- Attend events outside of standard work hours.
- Perform additional development-related activities at the request of the CDO.
- Serves as the department head in the absence of the CDO.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Experience & Qualifications
- Commitment to PPLM’s mission and ability to communicate organizational priorities to the general public.
- Demonstrated ability to work with people of different races, ethnicities, sexual and gender identities and expressions, ages, abilities and experiences.
- Clear experience with DEI and Belonging work; ability to embrace PPLM’s Equity Action Plan and represent the work to donors and supporters.
- Commitment to addressing the impact of racism and other oppressions on sexual health.
- At least ten years of increasingly responsible development experience with demonstrated success in an organization involved in a multi-year major fundraising campaign.
- Comfort and facility with direct, face-to-face fundraising with proven ability to close major gifts, write a compelling case for giving, and direct stewardship strategy for major donors.
- Demonstrated success as a manager of people and processes.
- Experience partnering with senior staff and leadership volunteers to meet fundraising goals.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both writing and speaking.
- Highly developed relationship building skills.
- Facility with fundraising databases; Raiser’s Edge knowledge strongly preferred.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and set and consistently meet deadlines and goals; self-motivated and directed.
- Commitment to addressing the impact of racism and other oppressions on sexual health.
- BA/BS degree required. Equivalent experience considered.
- A valid driver’s license and ability to independently get to meetings with volunteers and donors and off-site events.
- A collaborative spirit and a sense of humor.
